I'm feeling a bit ranty today so bare with me.
I don't know about you but I am getting mighty tired of hearing how we are 'supposed' to blog.
I have had it with the constant barrage of "do this" and "don't do that" and "be original" or "make it look pretty" mentalities. Because honestly, who actually cares? Your blog is for YOU.
I feel like blogging is becoming a competition on who can be the next 'big thing' and therefore everyone is focused on utilising a series of 'rules' or 'blogger norms' to gain readership and get companies interested. Which is great. I mean honestly it really is awesome that blogging has become something that is being taken seriously and people are actually able to make a living from it (kudos to you my friend!) but the emphasis seems to be what the reader wants from your blog in order for you to do well...
Why isn't it what you want from your blog?
Aesthetics seem to be something that are continually ripped on. If your blog isn't pleasing to the eye then chances are you won't even get noticed but if you try to up your game and go with the current blogging trends then your seen as being unoriginal. Why does this even matter?!
If that means you want an entirely generic marble background with some pretty flowers chucked in ..... eh hem .... then that is absolutely brilliant. If you want something that is more personal and original to you that is also absolutely brilliant. Blogging should be about what you want to put out into the world. The message you want to send shouldn't be defined by what you think you have to do to gain a readership and it certainly shouldn't be dictated to you by any other blogger.
Don't get me wrong I actually enjoy blogger tip's posts most of the time and 9/10 I think the blogging community is a great supportive place. But when they start getting preachy it really irritates me. What works for one person may not work for another and I think sometime people put too much thought into the aesthetic appeal of a blog and what they need to do in order to gain readers than the actual content they are putting out into the world.
So this is my little message to the world that my blog is for me. The content I write is published because I want it to be. This little space on the web is mine and I am perfectly happy with it's entirely generic aesthetic but completely unique writing and general 'me-ness'.
It may not be perfect to any one else but I love it. Because surely that is why we all needlessly pour our hearts into our blogs isn't it? Because we love them?
How are you feeling about the current blogging attitudes?
I actually agree with you Em! I don't think there should be these rights and wrongs, people have to remember why they started blogging and if it's a creative outlet that's fine. You should be writing what you like to write and not just to please others.

Exactly! People need to start feeling comfortable with the content they are producing and embracing it!

I agree with this too. I enjoy reading posts about improving your blog etc but I won't necessarily follow all of them. ;-) x
